“Diversity in research teams can enhance the effectiveness of team science” (NSERC Guide on Integrating EDI Considerations in Research). Being member of a diverse team exposes trainees to a multitude of perspectives, helps to reduce bias and therefore contributes positively to their professional, academic and personal development. Diversity here is seen through an intersectional lens (socio-economic, ethno-cultural, gender, sexual orientation, disability, neurological, academic background, etc). Equity and inclusiveness can help in achieving the objective of a fair chance at success for all research group members. They are easier established in a diverse environment than in a homogeneous one with only few ‘outliers’. There are two simple principles that we follow in the research group to achieve an equitable and inclusive research environment:
(+) The dignity of the individual is absolute and not negotiable
(+) There is no tolerance for intolerance
